The European Age Verification App is (almost) ready
Amid ongoing debates over whether young people should be restricted from accessing social media, the European Commission is developing a European age verification solution that will allow users to prove they meet the required age without compromising their privacy. Rather than a single official application, the initiative consists of an open-source, privacy-preserving and user-friendly technology that can be implemented by Member States or private companies as standalone apps or integrated into future European Digital Identity Wallets.
Although European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced last April that the solution was "technically ready", it is not expected to be widely available until the end of 2026. Before then, pilot projects will be carried out in Cyprus, Denmark, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy and Spain. According to the Commission, users' privacy will be protected through zero-knowledge proof technology, which allows a person to prove they are above a certain age without revealing any additional personal information. Online platforms will only receive confirmation that the user meets the required age threshold, without learning their identity or tracking their online activity.
