The impact of the cost of living crisis on young people in Scotland

Research into the impact of the cost of living crisis on young people in Scotland has revealed that people as young as 11 years old are worried about the effect rising prices are having on their households.

Young Scot’s ‘How is the current cost of living affecting you?’ survey received over 1,000 responses from young people in communities across Scotland. It covered topics such as heating homes, electricity use, access to food and mental health.

The results showed that over 70% of young people are concerned about their parents, guardians or carers' financial well–being and the associated impact on their mental and physical health. Over 80% of young people said they had noticed a change in how their homes are heated – and over 50% said the cost crisis negatively impacted their mental health. Over 33% said they did not feel good about their physical health and well-being.

Young people also said the high living cost impacted their daily lives. Over 83% said they were more aware of how much electricity they are using, 52% said they were concerned about affording heating, and 50% said they were concerned about being able to afford electricity. Over 33% of young people also said they were concerned about being able to afford or access items such as food or petrol.

As part of the research, young people also shared the daily impact it is having on them:
“I can’t remember the last time my mum ate a full meal.” (14-year-old)

“I have spoken to my parents, regarding if there is anything more I can do, if they are concerned etc. I feel they don’t want to worry me and want me to think everything is okay, but I know it’s not.” (16-year-old)

“As with the heating, I simply cannot afford to use more electricity than is necessary. Money is being stretched so thin at present that any non-essential electricity is kept to the bare minimum. I would rather sit in the dark than have the light on and spend money I don't have.” (25-year-old)

In response to the cost of living crisis, Young Scot has launched a resource hub for young people on young.scot. The Cost Crisis Hub includes information on available discounts and managing budgets.
