Stop Defamation Declaration!
Slovenian Educational Centre Eksena is an independent educational centre based in Šentjur, Slovenia. They provide non-formal education and counselling in the field of relationships, personal development and tolerance. ERYICA Youth Ambassador Pascale Emily Jurenec works with this Eksena, and describes below their recent publication on defamation.
Educational Centre Eksena provides many different kinds of educational programmes, promoting human rights, social progress and better living standards. They carry out different projects in accordance with their vision “to return respect, compassion and love to the individual… to help create a society that is successful and creative, without being destructive.”
In the framework of these efforts, the UNESCO Declaration of Principles on Tolerance has now been translated into Slovenian. Each year on International Day for Tolerance (16th November) the centre organises a project for kindergartens, primary and high schools and all other youth organisations with the aim of promoting tolerance and friendship.
They also run a project called “Stop defamation” to raise awareness about defamation. Within this the project, they have published the Declaration Stop Defamation. According to this, “defamation is defined as malicious spreading of lies, half-truths, distorted, biased, incomplete, or unverified information about another person or a group of people in order to harm them. In the modern world of the internet and social media, defamation is increasing as never before, because it was never before so simple to transmit information to such a large number of people. At the same time, defamation is getting dangerous new dimensions through hate speech and fake news with harmful consequences”. For the purposes of raising awareness about the harmful consequences of defamation and encouraging tolerance, understanding, and peace, they ask the United Nations to declare 10 October as WORLD STOP DEFAMATION DAY.
If you are interested in participating in their projects, let them know!
